Largs Zone Championships Report

from Christina Lewthwaite

Representing Nairn Sailing Club, Calum Cook, Matthew Scott and Christina Lewthwaite travelled to Largs to be 3 of the 132 sailors competing in the Volvo RYA Scotland Junior and Youth Championships.

During the weekend there were brilliant sailing conditions. Saturday 24th saw a full 3 races for all classes in beautiful sunshine and a wind of 12-14 knots with gusts up to 18 knots. Sunday 25th brought extreme weather conditions of up to 30 knots. A decision was made for each class to complete one race only allowing two fleets out at a time.

The challenging conditions in the Largs Channel were very different from our enclosed home area at Whiteness. The Nairn sailors coped with this well and had a brilliant time and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. RYA coaches on the water gave support between races and the Largs Sailing Club gave good land support with launching and recovery.

Robert gave us great pre-event advice and encouragement while Christine continued to support and encourage us during the weekend. We have all gained a lot from this experience which we will put to good use in future events.

Everybody truly had a immense time and we are all looking forward to the next season.
