NAIRN JUNIORS SAILING FOR SCOTLAND, SILVER MEDAL SUCCESS FOR CALUM
Calum Cook and Henry Kerr were both selected by RYA Scotland high performance to sail for Team Scotland at the 2013 RYA Eric Twiname UK Youth Sailing Championships, held at Rutland Water last weekend. Always highly competitive, the Championships, now in its 27th year, are the pinnacle of the RYA s Junior racing calendar for the 9 RYA English Zone and Home Country Squads. The invitational event welcomes over 268 competitors from across seven of the RYA Junior classes - Optimist, Topper, and Feva dinghy classes with the windsurfers racing on Bic Techno boards with 4.5m, 5.8m, 6.8m and 7.8m rigs, competing for individual and team honours.
Calum and Henry were both sailing Optimist dinghies in a fleet of 70 competitors. The conditions were challenging with strong gusty winds, and frequent driving rain squalls between periods of bright spring sunshine. Heavy weather sailing ability and decision making skills were tested as the sailors tried to make gains with every wind shift. Calum sailed consistently well counting 5 races in the top 8 to achieve 2nd place overall, behind Hannah Tucker from England's East Zone. Henry Kerr who, with less racing experience, still achieved a 14th place finish as his best result, and came 39th overall- a very impressive performance from both young sailors from the north..
Overall, Team Scotland placed 4th out of the 9 Teams, with notable success also in the windsurfing. This is the best team result in years and the big improvement is in part due to the new RYA Sailing Academy program which now provides year round open race training for all interested junior sailors in Scotland, a legacy of the success of sailing at the London Olympics.
Both Calum and Henry will be back down to England next weekend for the 2013 UK Inland Optimist Championships at Grafham Water, a UK ranking event which will attract a huge fleet of 250 of the best Oppie sailors in the UK, including the Worlds and European Teams and full GBR squads.
